Fresh cigar tobacco, brambly berry and wood spice form the enticing, brooding nose of this dense pour. There's a dark fruit core underneath, supporting all of that earthy, spicy goodness, which shows more of its concentration on the velvety palate. Structuring tannins offer good grip through the close, which also shows nice evolution from fruit to earthy spice. Drink now–2029. Lauren Buzzeo

About The Producer

The Beeslaar Pinotage comes from a single vineyard in Stellenbosch, South Africa, planted on shale soils. 2018 Will be remembered as one of the driest vintages in recent history. Average daytime temperatures during harvest were 2°C warmer than the long term average, but there were no significant heatwaves. Cooler nights played an important role in allowing the vines to recover from the day’s stress.

The grapes were picked and brought to the cellar for destemming, sorting and fermentation, which took place in open top concrete tanks, with punch downs performed every two hours. The wine was aged in 225 liter French oak barrels (40% new) for 21 months.

The 2018 Beeslaar Pinotage is a true expression of a great vineyard site and shows the consistency of the 25 year old bush vines. The wine offers aromas and flavors of black currant and baking spice, with complex notes of dark chocolate and licorice. The palate is structured but elegant, with fine-grained tannins linger on the mouthwateringly dry finish. A classic expression of Pinotage which deftly balances power and elegance.
